The term is often used with communications and networking.FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) - FHSS continuously changes (hops) the carrier frequency of a conventional carrier several times per second according to a pseudo-random set of channels. Because a fixed frequency is not used, and only the transmitter and receiver know the hop patterns, interception of FHSS is extremely difficult. IP Address - In the most widely installed level of the Internet Protocol (IP) today, an IP address is a 32-binary digit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent in packets across the Internet. Ping (Packet INternet Groper) - An Internet utility used to determine whether a particular IP address is online. UDP (User Datagram Protocol) - A method (protocol) used along with the IP (Internet Protocol) to send data in the form of message units (datagram) between network devices over a LAN or WAN. While IP takes care of handling the actual delivery of the data (routing), UDP takes care of keeping track of the individual units of data (called packets) that a message is divided into for effi- cient delivery over the network. Achieving these functions simultaneously requires a dynamic RF networking technology that links access points and nodes. In such a system, the user’s end node undertakes a search for the best possible access to the system. First, it evaluates such factors as signal strength and quality, as well as the message load currently being carried by each access point and the distance of each access point to the wired backbone. There are eleven available channels, ranging from 1 to 11 (in North America). If your questions are not addressed here, refer to the Linksys website, www.linksys.com. Not4Sale 4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended if you don't need more than the spec. It scored 2-3% lower on theoretical max chart than e.g. E2000 (not a big deal really).I bought this router with the intention of wiping the firmware and running Tomato USB instead. I never even attempted to experiment with the original stock firmware. The solution is free, but far from perfect. If you can live with using your PC to make phone calls and can deal with the slight-to-moderate lag, it might work for you. But it didn't work well enough for my wife who works from home and spends a large part of her day on the phone with clients. I learned about ooma and the ooma telco while listening to the Clark Howard radio show.

The robust signal travels farther, maintaining wireless connections much farther than standard Wireless-G. With Wireless-N, the farther away you are, the more speed advantage you get. It works great with standard Wireless-G and -B equipment, but when both ends of the wireless link are Wireless-N, the router can increase the throughput even more by using twice as much radio band, yielding speeds far faster than standard Wireless-G. But unlike other speed-enhanced technologies, Wireless-N can dynamically enable this double-speed mode for Wireless-N devices, while still connecting to other wireless devices at their respective fastest speeds.

The ooma telco is a piece of hardware that allows you to use your internet connection to make VOIP calls using a conventional phone and doesn't rely on a PC (similar to Vonage, but MUCH cheaper and actually rated higher by Consumer Reports). It worked and worked pretty well, but I was concerned about prioritizing VOIP traffic versus other internet traffic given my limited outbound bandwidth. Unfortunately, the router's built-in QoS capabilities are not user accessible. The ooma telco itself can be used as a router and does provide QoS, but it doesn't include wireless. What I really needed was a new router with wireless and a robust QoS solution. The Linksys 160N loaded with Tomato USB firmware fit this bill and did so on the cheap. Installing Tomato USB on the 160N was a snap and it's simple and straightforward to configure. The router that I received was a Version 3 and I used the tomato-K26-1.28.9054MIPSR2-beta-Std build (if you get a version 2 router, you'll be SOL when it comes to Tomato). Tomato included everything that I wanted, like MAC filtering, port forwarding, DHCP reservations and QoS support. The 160N provides impressive wireless coverage, at least as good as my 2Wire 3800 and much better than my disappointing (and much more expensive) NetGear DGND-3300 router that I initially tried to use for this purpose. It's true that the 160N is only a 2.4GHZ router and supports a max speed of 144mbps, but that's more than adequate for me. Keep in mind, your internet connection is going to be slower (probably a lot slower) than this anyway. In the past week that I've been using it, it's worked flawlessly. No dropped connections and no reboots required. I don't think you can find a better value in a wireless router. In fact, this is best router that I've ever owned. I even ordered a 2nd one (even though I don't really need it -- the one that I have seems to be covering the whole house). Whether I'd feel the same way if I was running the stock firmware, I can't say.

Go ahead. Take a chance:)That is exactly why I bought the router. Specifically, I had a router, but I recently bought a Netflix Roku box. I was having horrible connection issues, and I decided the router could be the culprit (having a hard time managing the streaming demands, I assumed). I read another review where someone posted a link to easily install DD WRT, and that was helpful. However, I had some trouble, and I want to add the steps I took in hopes it will help someone else. First, keep in mind that when you order this router, you might get router version 1, 2, or 3. DD WRT is ONLY supported for version 1 and 3. I received VERSION 3 (WRT160Nv3), and so my suggestion to others ONLY WOULD APPLY to those receiving a VERSION 3 model. However, I hope to save you time and frustration. After updating the firmware, I had two major issues. Two things you can do: 1.) clear your browser cache; and if that still doesn't work; 2.) download Google Chrome browser. I am on a Mac, and was trying to use Safari. Here is the BIG ISSUE. The wireless signal was terrible. It was weak to unusable. No big deal, there, as you can still type in your network name to use wireless; but the signal strength was terrible. Anyhow, I read, read, and read on the forums to try to figure this out. I didn't get any concrete courses of action, but I did find a more up-to-date DD WRT firmware release that ultimately I decided to just gamble on and see if it worked out. For me, I just wanted a cheap router that would be reliable for my Roku box and give me a good wireless network. It looks like I have that now.But generally speaking, no big issues. Why 4 starts? Because I had to reset the router once just 2 days after I set it up. You know, nothing is perfect. By the way, it has a lot of settings for security, and I have used those very well. I recommend this device.Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again.

Sometimes the username and password doesn't work that we mentioned in the top of this guide. Most people don't know their router IP address. Most times you'll find this IP on the bottom or back of your router device. But if you are not able to find this IP on your router or in the user manual then you can try some methods to get the router I. In the list below we listed all known router IPs for the manufacturer Linksys. But some are available by an default URL as well. This is very useful if you don't know your default router gateway. This can be done easily by clicking on the reset button at the back or at the bottom of your router. If you hold down this small button for approximately 20 seconds, (you may have to use a toothpick), then your modem will get restored to the factory settings. What you need to keep in mind is that when you reset your modem, you will lose your connection online. It is therefore better to take an expert's assistance in this regard. Note: If you have not enough information, it is obviously recommended that you should get help from a person who has all the knowledge about this topic. Here's how to get in This password, like most passwords, is case sensitive, which in this instance means all the letters should be in lowercase. Some Linksys routers use a default username but that's not the case with the WRT160N.The default password for the WRT160N router is way too easy for anyone to guess, which is probably why it was changed. You can store it in a free password manager to make sure you don't ever lose it.For example, wireless network settings like the SSID and password will have to be re-entered, as will any custom DNS servers, etc.If you can't, it just means the IP address was changed at some point but you've forgotten what the new one is.What you need to do is find the default gateway IP address of a computer that's connected to the router. It's that IP address that's the one you need to use as the URL to access the router.

You might want to consider a powerline adapter as well Nothing out of the ordinary. Once you take it out, just follow the instructions (I followed the youtube tutorial by Cisco) and it just works. It is not an extender, it is a bridge, so you might want to set up your ip phone before connecting it using the wbpn adapter. I have been using it for 2 months now, and still doing great. No issues whatsover, however the device is pretty close to the main wireless router, therefore I cannot verify if the range works good or not.You have to connect through a web interface at 192.168.1.254 while directly connected to a PC with a static IP address enabled in the 192.168.1.x range to set the WBPN up without one-button setup. But that's not the real tricky (bad) part - I downloaded a firmware upgrade from the Cisco website and followed the Cisco upgrade instructions. A Google check showed many other people had the same problem. I shipped the device back to Amazon for a refund. (Thank goodness for Amazon's excellence return policies !) Lesson learned: be careful of any firmware upgrade - or avoid firmware upgrades all-together. In my opinion, this is not acceptable. This way, we don't have to run ethernet cables for the phones. Range works very well with our routers, and they stay connected. It is a great product and I travel a lot and sometimes find myself far away from the office so this is great. The connection is perfect it has yet to fail. Not a fan of having to program from a computer first. But after you get past that it super easy to set up and hook up.I ended up buying a wifi extender and plugged my phone's Ethernet cord to the wifi extender instead. DaPoppa1 5.0 out of 5 stars The Cisco WBPN Wireless-N Bridge connected right up and has performed well. We are in a busy office environment many WiFi signals, no problem. This is a great solution as we can add a phone anyplace we need. Very Stable. -----PRO TIP----- The enclosed disk has links to the support pages at Cisco and the IP for the phone interface (192.168.1.254) Very standard cut and dry set up, if you are familiar with the Cisco interface. Power it up and first plug it into your computer to access the device interface. My suggestion is to give the WBPN Wireless-N Bridge a static IP address, and NOT USE THE DCHP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) This will prevent the bridge from losing connection every time the IP gets bumped by some other device in your LAN. Also, the address you assign for this device is not the same as the address that you assign to the phone. If the bridge is assigned the static (192.168.1.55) then the phone that is using the bridge needs its own address, so give it (192.168.1.56). Both devices will show in your router log. Set up the phone IP just like any other device using the Phone menu. This will give a very stable set up. I did not do the firmware update, as it seems to be working fine. 1. You 1st have to change the network adaptor properties. 2. Put IP address in network adaptor properties any between 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.253 3. subnet mask 255.255.255.0 4. leave the gateway address field empty. 5.
